Preventive care

The most expensive bill
is the one you delayed.

These problems develop slowly and without pain until they need complex treatment. The entire point of coming in is to find them while they are still small.

Why the interval matters

Biofilm hardens in 24 to 72 hours.

Oral biofilm — the bacterial layer forming continuously on your teeth — turns into calculus within a day to three days if it is not removed.

Once it has hardened, brushing and flossing cannot remove it. No technique, no toothpaste, no amount of effort. It has to come off professionally.

Until it does, bacterial activity escalates underneath it. That is the mechanism behind almost everything on the list beside this.

What we are looking for
  • Tooth decay — caught on digital radiographs before a filling becomes a crown
  • Periodontal bone loss — detectable through 6-point probing before any symptom appears
  • Gingivitis — still reversible at this stage, with scaling and better home care
  • Interproximal decay — between the teeth, visible on X-ray and invisible to the eye
  • Enamel wear — identified through bite assessment and intraoral imaging

Every one of these is cheaper, simpler and less unpleasant to treat early.

The appointment

Three stages, not a rinse and polish.

01

Diagnostic evaluation

We start with your medical and dental history, then examine.

  • Digital dental radiographs
  • Oral cancer screening
  • Gum health and periodontal measurements
  • Enamel wear and bite alignment
02

Professional cleaning

The hygienist removes plaque and calculus — including beneath the gum line, where bacteria accumulate and where you cannot reach.

  • Ultrasonic scaling, which most patients find gentler than hand scaling alone
  • Precision hand instrumentation
  • Polishing to lift surface stains
03

Examination by the dentist

After the cleaning, with the surfaces actually visible.

  • Early cavities
  • The state of existing fillings and crowns
  • Signs of gum disease
  • Bite function and enamel wear patterns
What sets the visit apart

You see it before we describe it.

The intraoral camera images every tooth surface in real time, on a screen you are looking at. The crack, the failing margin, the area of concern — you see it first, and then we explain it.

That changes the conversation entirely. You are not being told there is a problem; you are looking at one, and deciding what to do about it with the same information we have.

And before you arrive

Insurance confirmed in advance. New to the practice? We apply your new-patient benefits and coordinate with your carrier before the appointment, so the cost is settled before you sit down.

6-point periodontal probing. Six measurements around every tooth, recorded and tracked over time. It is how bone loss is caught before it becomes irreversible — and it is the step most often skipped elsewhere.

Cleaning questions

Answered honestly.

Do cleanings hurt?
For most people, no — uncomfortable at worst. If your gums are inflamed or there is a lot of calculus below the gum line, it can be tender, and that tenderness is itself information about gum health. Tell the hygienist; there are ways to make it easier, and it gets less uncomfortable the more regularly you come.
Are cleanings covered by insurance?
Most PPO plans cover routine cleanings in full, typically twice a year. We confirm your specific benefits with your carrier before your appointment rather than after it.
How often should I come?
Every six months suits most people. Some need three- or four-monthly — patients with a history of gum disease particularly, since the interval is really set by how quickly calculus rebuilds in your mouth, which varies. We will tell you which you are.
My gums bleed when I brush. Is that normal?
Common, but not normal — it is usually the first sign of gingivitis. The good news is that at that stage it is reversible with professional scaling and better home care. Left alone, it progresses to periodontal disease, and bone loss does not reverse.
It has been years since my last visit. Will I be told off?
No. People stay away for all sorts of reasons and a lecture helps nobody. Come in, let us see where things stand, and we will work out a plan from there. This is genuinely routine for us.
Do I need X-rays every time?
Not every visit — the interval depends on your age, your decay history and your risk. Our digital system uses about 80% less radiation than traditional film, but the principle is still to take them when they will tell us something, not by default.

Six months or more since your last one?

We welcome new patients from Wethersfield, Glastonbury, Newington, Rocky Hill and across Hartford County. Most PPO plans accepted, and we confirm your benefits before you arrive.
