The appointment that
stops the expensive one.
A cavity caught at a check-up is a filling. Left alone, it becomes a crown or a root canal. Routine care is the least dramatic thing we do and the part that saves patients the most money.
Nothing is abbreviated.
Every routine appointment covers all four of these. They are not add-ons and they are not optional extras.
Clinical examination
A full look at every tooth, existing fillings and crowns, the bite, and the soft tissue around them.
Digital X-rays
Showing decay between teeth and below the gum line, where nothing is visible to the eye.
Six-point periodontal probing
Six measurements around every tooth, tracking gum health over time rather than glancing at it.
Oral cancer screening
Checking the tongue, cheeks, palate and throat. Quick, painless, and the reason it matters is obvious.
The gum probing is the part people skip.
Six-point periodontal probing means six measurements taken around each tooth, recorded and compared visit to visit. It is how gum disease is caught while it is still reversible.
Gum disease is largely painless until it is advanced. By the time a tooth feels loose, bone has already been lost and that bone does not grow back. The numbers on the chart change long before you feel anything — which is the entire point of measuring them.
A gum screening today can prevent periodontal surgery later. It is the least interesting five minutes of the appointment and probably the most valuable.
Six months isn’t a rule for everyone.
Every six months
Right for most adults with healthy gums and low cavity risk. It is frequent enough to catch problems while they are small, and the interval the ADA recommends as a baseline.
More often
Patients with a history of periodontal disease, dry mouth, or an elevated cavity risk are better served by shorter intervals. We will tell you honestly which group you are in rather than defaulting everyone to the same schedule.
Prevention, not just inspection.
Spotting a problem is half of it. The rest is stopping the next one.

Answered honestly.
Is a check-up covered by insurance?
I haven’t been to a dentist in years. Will I get a lecture?
Do I really need X-rays every time?
At what age should my child first be seen?
What if you find something?
Are you taking new patients?
Overdue is fine.
Whether it has been six months or six years, the appointment is the same — find out where you stand and decide what to do about it.
