Why it matters
When Does a Tooth Need a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a full-coverage restoration that fits over the entire visible portion of a damaged, decayed, or weakened tooth – restoring its original shape, strength, and appearance. At Family Dental Center of Connecticut, Dr. Kasabji and Dr. Engelhardt recommend dental crowns when a tooth’s structural integrity can no longer be maintained with a filling alone, and when preserving the natural root is the best long-term clinical decision.
Placing a dental crown at the right time protects a compromised tooth from fracture, prevents the spread of decay, and eliminates the pain and sensitivity that accompany a severely damaged tooth. Delaying crown placement when it is clinically indicated results in a more complex and more expensive outcome – often extraction followed by a dental implant or bridge.
Large or failing filling
when decay has destroyed so much tooth structure that a filling can no longer provide adequate support
Cracked tooth syndrome
a fracture that causes pain when biting – a crown holds the tooth together and prevents the crack from propagating
Severely decayed tooth
when decay extends too deep for a filling to restore the tooth safely without risk of pulp involvement
Root canal-treated tooth
a tooth that has undergone root canal therapy requires a crown to restore biting strength and prevent fracture
Broken or fractured tooth
trauma that removes a significant portion of visible tooth structure above the gumline
Worn teeth from bruxism
grinding that has eroded enamel to a point where bite function and enamel protection are compromised
Dental implant restoration
a porcelain crown placed on a dental implant post completes the full tooth replacement
Cosmetic correction
reshaping or covering a severely discolored, misshapen, or undersized tooth

What To Expect at Your Dental Crown Appointment In Wethersfield
Most dental crown procedures at Family Dental Center of Connecticut are completed in two appointments. The first visit prepares the tooth and captures digital impressions for precise crown fabrication. The second visit permanently places your custom-fitted, shade-matched porcelain crown.
Diagnostic Evaluation and Treatment Planning
Before any preparation begins, the tooth and surrounding structures are evaluated thoroughly.
Digital X-rays to assess the root, bone levels, and the extent of decay or damage inside the tooth
Intraoral camera imaging to examine the fracture or decay pattern at the crown margins and gumline
Pulp vitality assessment to determine whether root canal therapy is needed before crown placement
6-point periodontal probing around the affected tooth and adjacent teeth
Tooth Preparation and Digital Impressions (Visit 1)
Under local anesthesia, the tooth is carefully shaped to receive the crown – removing a uniform layer of enamel from all surfaces to create space for the crown material. Any remaining decay is removed at this stage.
Precise tooth reduction to ensure the crown will seat correctly and maintain your natural bite alignment
Digital impressions taken – no uncomfortable putty molds; a precise 3D scan of your prepared tooth and surrounding teeth
Shade selection to match the crown to your adjacent natural teeth
A temporary crown is placed on the prepared tooth to protect it while your permanent crown is fabricated at the dental laboratory
Permanent Crown Placement (Visit 2)
When your custom porcelain crown returns from the laboratory, the temporary crown is removed, the permanent crown is tried in for fit and shade verification, and then cemented permanently in place.
Bite verification to confirm the crown does not interfere with your natural bite function
Margin check using intraoral imaging to confirm the crown fits precisely at the gumline with no open margins
Final cement and post-placement care instructions
Insurance coordination confirmed before your crown placement appointment

Why Family Dental Center
Precision Crown Placement. No Guesswork.
A dental crown is only as good as the preparation beneath it and the impression that guides its fabrication. Imprecise preparation, poor impressions, or open margins at the gumline lead to recurrent decay, crown failure, and ultimately the extraction of the very tooth the crown was placed to save.
01.
Digital Impressions - No Putty, No Distortion
Traditional putty impressions can distort during removal, leading to crowns that require multiple adjustments at seating. Our digital impression system captures a precise 3D model of your prepared tooth and your bite – producing crowns that fit the first time correctly.
02.
Intraoral Camera Margin Verification
After permanent crown placement, intraoral camera imaging confirms the crown margin sits precisely at the gumline with no gap, no overhang, and no open margin where decay can begin. You see the margin on the chairside monitor before you leave.
03.
Insurance Coordination Before Both Appointments
Crown procedures involve two insurance claims – one for the preparation appointment and one for the placement. Our team coordinates both before your first visit and provides a clear, itemized cost estimate. No billing surprises between appointments.

How long does a dental crown last?
A porcelain or zirconia dental crown placed on a properly prepared tooth and maintained with regular professional cleanings and good daily oral hygiene typically lasts 15 or more years. The most common reasons for crown failure are recurrent decay at the margins (caused by a poor original fit or inadequate home care), fracture of the crown material (more common in patients who grind their teeth), or failure of the underlying tooth structure requiring extraction.
Is getting a crown painful?
The tooth preparation appointment is performed under local anesthesia – the area is fully numbed before any preparation begins, and you should feel pressure but no pain throughout. After the anesthesia wears off, mild soreness in the prepared tooth and surrounding gum is normal for 24 to 48 hours. The temporary crown may be slightly sensitive to temperature. The permanent crown placement appointment typically requires little or no anesthesia.
Do I need a root canal before a crown?
Not always. A root canal is needed before crown placement only if the tooth’s pulp is infected, inflamed, or necrotic—conditions confirmed through digital X-rays and pulp vitality testing before preparation begins. A tooth with healthy pulp tissue can receive a crown without root canal treatment. Our diagnostic evaluation will determine definitively whether root canal therapy is needed before your crown procedure.
What should I do if my temporary crown falls off?
Call our Wethersfield office at (860) 430-4388 as soon as possible. A dislodged temporary crown leaves the prepared tooth vulnerable to sensitivity, contamination, and minor shifting that can affect the fit of your permanent crown. If you cannot reach us immediately, you can use temporary crown cement from a pharmacy to replace it until your appointment.
Is a dental crown covered by insurance?
Most PPO dental insurance plans cover dental crowns when placed for restorative or functional reasons —such as repairing a fractured tooth, restoring a root canal-treated tooth, or replacing a failing large filling. Coverage for purely cosmetic crowns varies by plan. Our team verifies your benefits and provides a clear cost estimate for both appointments before your first visit.
What are dental crowns?
A dental crown is a cap that surrounds the tooth. We typically use a crown to restore a damaged tooth, but it can also be used to improve the appearance of a smile. A crown can consist of three different materials: all-metal, ceramic-on-metal, and all-ceramic. The location of the crown in the teeth will determine the best material to use. For example, the front teeth should have an all-ceramic crown, if possible, since it looks most natural. Patients often use ceramic-on-metal crowns because they look natural yet offer the durability only metal can provide.
What are dental bridges?
A dental bridge is a way to replace a missing tooth. At Family Dental Center of Connecticut, we provide clients with dental bridges if they want to replace a tooth without wearing dentures or undergoing surgery. The new tooth is held in place by two crowns. It looks natural and consists of a ceramic or porcelain material to match the surrounding teeth. As a cosmetic dentist, Maher Kasabji will make sure that the new tooth looks and feels amazing.

A tooth that needs a crown but has not yet received one is a tooth at risk. Every day without a crown increases the likelihood of a fracture extending below the gumline – converting a straightforward crown case into an extraction-and-implant case. If you have been told you need a crown, or if you are experiencing pain, sensitivity, or visible cracking in a tooth, the right time to act is now.
Family Dental Center of Connecticut welcomes patients in Wethersfield, Glastonbury, Newington, Rocky Hill, and across Hartford County who need dental crowns. Most PPO insurance plans are accepted, and new patients are always welcome – no referral required.
